Identification
Water willow has narrow, lance-shaped, willow-like leaves arranged oppositely on erect stems 1–3 feet tall. It produces distinctive white to pale purple flowers with purple streaks. Plants grow in shallow water and form dense colonies along shorelines. Key distinguishing features:
- Narrow, lance-shaped opposite leaves (resemble willow leaves)
- White to pale purple flowers with violet streaks
- Erect stems 1–3 feet tall
- Dense colony-forming growth in shallow water
Commonly confused with: Smartweed (also has narrow leaves but pink flower spikes), True willows (woody shrubs/trees, not herbaceous)
Treatment
Water willow is one of the most ecologically valuable emergent plants. Thinning is preferred over removal. Elimination is generally not recommended.
- Glyphosate 5.4 — Foliar application for selective thinning.
- Manual thinning — Preferred method to maintain coverage while creating access.
Important: Water willow provides excellent shoreline habitat. It is frequently used in restoration projects and should be preserved in most management scenarios.
