Identification
Bulrushes have tall (3–8 feet), round or triangular stems with small drooping flower clusters near the tip. Leaves may be reduced to sheaths at the base of the stem. Distinguished from cattails by round/triangular stems (vs. flat leaves) and drooping flower clusters (vs. cylindrical spikes). Key distinguishing features:
- Tall, round or triangular stems (not flat like cattails)
- Drooping flower clusters near stem tip
- Minimal true leaves — mostly stem
Treatment
- Glyphosate 5.4 — Applied to actively growing foliage.
- Clearcast (imazamox) — Systemic option.
Full Profile
- Native Range: Native to North America
- US Distribution: All 48 contiguous states. USDA Zones 3–10.
- Regulatory Status: Not regulated (native).
- Habitat: Shallow water margins, marshes, wet meadows, shorelines.
- Ecological Benefits: Extremely valuable. Critical habitat for waterfowl (nesting), fish spawning, and amphibians. Effective biofilter for nutrients and sediment. Shoreline erosion control. In most situations, bulrush stands should be preserved unless they are preventing access to open water.
