Vallisneria (Tape Grass) Identification & Treatment
Scientific Name: Vallisneria americana Category: Submerged Tier: 3 — Localized — Native, high ecological value

Identification
Vallisneria has long, ribbon-like leaves (up to 6 feet) that grow from a basal rosette at the sediment. Leaves are bright green, flexible, and sway with the current. Female plants produce small white flowers on long, coiled stalks that reach the surface. Key distinguishing features:
- Long, ribbon-like leaves from a basal rosette
- Leaves up to 6 feet long, about 1/2 inch wide
- Rounded leaf tips (not pointed)
- Female flowers on distinctive coiled stalks
Commonly confused with: Sago Pondweed (much narrower, threadlike leaves), Eelgrass (saltwater species)
Treatment
Vallisneria is one of the most ecologically valuable submerged plants in freshwater systems. Treatment should be avoided if possible. Selective management only when growth impedes access.
- Aquathol K (endothall) — Contact herbicide for spot treatment if needed.
- Mechanical harvesting — Preferable to chemical treatment in most situations.
Important: Vallisneria provides excellent habitat and should be preserved where possible. Consider treating only small access corridors rather than broad application.
Full Profile
- Native Range: North America
- US Distribution: Eastern and central United States. USDA Zones 4–10.
- Regulatory Status: Not regulated (native). Protected in some jurisdictions.
- Habitat: Lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams with moderate to good water clarity.
- Reproduction: Primarily by stolons (runners), forming dense beds. Also produces seed.
- Ecological Benefits: Excellent habitat for fish, invertebrates, and waterfowl. Canvasback ducks rely heavily on Vallisneria beds. Stabilizes sediment and improves water clarity. Often considered a keystone species in freshwater ecosystems.
