Identification
Sago pondweed has very fine, thread-like leaves that give the plant a grass-like appearance underwater. Leaves are up to 6 inches long but very narrow. Stems are slender and highly branched. Small flower spikes emerge above the water surface. Key distinguishing features:
- Very fine, thread-like leaves (like underwater grass)
- Highly branched, fan-shaped growth habit
- Small tubers (starchy, banana-shaped) at the base and along underground stems
Commonly confused with: Horned pondweed (very similar fine leaves, but with wider curved leaves), widgeongrass (similar habitat but more robust)
Treatment
Recommended Natural Waterscapes Products:
- Aquathol K or Aquathol Super K (endothall) — Contact herbicide effective on sago pondweed.
- Sonar A.S. (fluridone) — Systemic option for season-long control.
Note: Tubers are not killed by most herbicides. Multi-year management is typical.
Full Profile
- Native Range: Native to North America (cosmopolitan worldwide)
- US Distribution: All 48 contiguous states. All EPA ecoregions. USDA Zones 3–10.
- Regulatory Status: Not regulated (native).
- Habitat: Lakes, ponds, streams, estuaries, alkaline waters. Tolerates brackish conditions.
- Reproduction: Tubers, rhizomes, fragmentation, seed. Tubers are the primary overwintering and spread mechanism.
- Ecological Benefits: Exceptionally important waterfowl food — sago pondweed tubers are the single most consumed food item for many species of diving and dabbling ducks. Critical for waterfowl habitat management. Fish use dense beds for cover and spawning. When managing sago pondweed, preserve some stands for wildlife value.
- Seasonal Behavior: Spring emergence from tubers, peak summer growth, tuber production in fall, die-back in winter.
