Identification
Bladderwort is a rootless, free-floating submerged plant with finely divided, thread-like leaves bearing numerous small bladder-like traps (1–5 mm). The bladders are the key ID feature — they are small, dark, round structures scattered along the leaves. Produces yellow snapdragon-like flowers on stalks above the water. Key distinguishing features:
- Small, dark bladder traps on finely divided leaves
- Rootless — floats in water column
- Yellow flowers above water surface
- Carnivorous — bladders trap and digest small aquatic organisms
Treatment
Recommended Natural Waterscapes Products:
- Aquathol K (endothall) — Contact herbicide.
- Harvester (diquat) — Contact herbicide for quick knockdown.
Full Profile
- Native Range: Native to North America (cosmopolitan)
- US Distribution: Found in most US states. Common in EPA ecoregions with soft, acidic water — Northern Lakes and Forests, Atlantic Coastal Pine Barrens, Southeastern Plains. USDA Zones 3–10.
- Regulatory Status: Not regulated (native).
- Habitat: Ponds, lakes, bogs, ditches. Prefers soft, acidic, nutrient-poor water.
- Reproduction: Fragmentation, turions. Annual in northern climates via turions.
- Ecological Benefits: Carnivorous plant — traps and digests tiny aquatic invertebrates, mosquito larvae, and zooplankton. Provides food for waterfowl. Contributes to nutrient cycling in nutrient-poor waters. Unique ecological role and generally should be appreciated rather than managed unless excessive.
- Seasonal Behavior: Active spring through fall. Produces turions that sink in autumn and re-emerge in spring.
